ANNOUNCING THE RE-INITIATION OF  REDCATSUR, THE ART SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY NETWORK FOR LATIN AMERICA

ANNOUNCING THE RE-INITIATION OF  REDCATSUR, THE  ART SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY NETWORK FOR LATIN AMERICA

When we set  up the YASMIN list we realised the difficulty of multiple languages around the Mediterranean, and we allow posts in multiple languages of the 12 or so languages that our moderators are familiar with. In spite of this YASMIN has become an English dominant list with the advantages and dangers this represents. The truth is there are many mediterraneans.

FIND YASMIN AT : http://www.media.uoa.gr/yasmin/

Recently several YASMINERS attended a meeting in Casablanca organised by the Organisation International de la Francophonie and hosted by  IRISSON  ( a summary , in french, of the meeting is at http://www.rami.zinclafriche.org/spip.php?article315).

A totally different Mediterranean region, that happens to speak French, networked there.

The YASMIN moderator Soussi Houssine has suggested that we develop some mediterranean networking in arabic. The truth is that in spite of advertised globalising nature of the internet, it often reinforces existing cultural definitions rather than creating new ones.

Since we started YASMIN on line automated translations works much better and many people now routinely translate texts they get in other than their primary language. This helps. But as we know language is deeply rooted in the construction of our psyches, world views, value systems. With all due respect to the inventors of language , it is not possible to translate the psyche. The psyche is untranslatable and unsimulatable.

Five years ago we were having this discussion with Ricardo Dal Farra from Argentina and other spanish speaking colleagues, and a new network was created called REDCATSUR in Spanish with a geographic focus on latin america.

The list of is currently moderated by Ricardo Dal Farra, Claudio Rivera Seguel, Yto Aranda and YASMIN and Leonardo/ISAST are pleased to be partners of this sister network.

Here is the information on how to join REDCATSUR:

REDCATSUR

A Common space for discussion, exchange and promotion of initiatives and projects around areas of encounter between art, science and technology in Latin America.

Hello list members REDCATSUR!

With some days delay, we are relaunching the list REDCATSUR now using Google Groups.

http://groups.google.com/group/redcatsur/about

The Electronic Arts Experimentation and Research Center’s team (CEIArtE) at the National University of Tres de Febrero (UNTreF -Buenos Aires – Argentina) has been dealing with the transfer of data to REDCATSUR – Google Groups. Work is also undergoing to allow future access to the historical archives of the list.

We are also defining a restructuring to streamline the operations of REDCATSUR. We’ll post any news as soon as we move forward with the changes.

We want to take this opportunity to thank the Amauta company and in particular Carlos Battilana and his team, who helped us to launch the original project using their technology and human resources. Amauta has helped us to keep REDCATSUR operational, offering technical solutions to various problems that were arising during these years of operation.

We also wish to acknowledge the support provided by Leonardo, the International Society for the Arts, Sciences and Technology (ISAST), co-sponsor of this project.

We want to remind everyone that the primary motivation that led to the creation of REDCATSUR was to have a common space for discussion and collaboration. While sending an announcement that we think is important every so often is not forbidden, it is important to consider that REDCATSUR was not created to duplicate or compete with other resources available on the Internet, it was generated considering the need of a shared space for exchange of ideas and promotion of initiatives and projects around areas of encounter between art, science and technology in Latin America.

We are networking now through REDCATSUR in Google Groups.

http://groups.google.com/group/redcatsur/about

Igualmente deseamos agradecer el apoyo brindado por Leonardo, the International Society for the Arts, Sciences and Technology (ISAST), co-sponsor de este proyecto.
