I appreciated very much and admire Frank Malina who was both a most innovating scientist and engineer, in particular with the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and a great and inventive artist who created a new kinetic art based on his possibilities, probably linked to his engineering experience, of imagining complex and subtle machines, the lumidyne system, which has many aspects which anticipate computer art.

He had as much a synthetic vision of art and science as is possible in our period so different from Renaissance, where science has become very specialized.

He was a generous man with no prejudices, interested in other peoples’ ideas This is clearly one of the reasons he created LEONARDO where artists could describe their work from their own point of view, just as scientists describe their own discoveries.

When an article was accepted to be published in LEONARDO he went through the article in great detail together with the author, who was warmly received by himself and his wife Marjorie in their home, so as to have the article most easily read. He did not try to influence the author but his remarks and suggestions were most interesting and helped the author to fully understand the ideas underlying his own article. He made me notice, for instance that my considerations about science were on epistemology rather then on science itself and this became the basis of the many articles I published on the comparison of artistic creation and scientific discovery

He is certainly one of the persons who helped me most to become aware of my own ideas. LEONARDO has truly played a fundamental role in my life as an artist.

Bulat Galeyev, whose death seemed to be untimely, spoke enthusiastically about contacts with Frank and Roger Malina. It is an amazing coincidence but Bulat Galeyev’s birthday is on 2nd October, too.
